Looking after your mattress: how often and how

Air it, protect it, treat stains: the essentials for a fresh, clean bed.

Bright bedroom with a made bed in white linen and an open window

We spend a third of our lives on a mattress, yet we rarely think about it. Simple care helps keep a bed fresh and extends its use. The frequencies below are indicative and depend on how it is used.

Air it

When you get up, open the window and leave the bed unmade for a few minutes. When changing sheets, leave the mattress bare for a while before covering it.

Protect it

A washable mattress protector limits soiling and is far easier to wash than a mattress. Wash it regularly, like your sheets.

Vacuum and rotate

  • Vacuum the surface and edges from time to time.
  • Following the manufacturer's guidance, rotate or flip the mattress a few times a year. Some models must not be flipped: check the instructions.

Treating a stain

Blot without rubbing, using very little moisture: a mattress that stays wet takes a long time to dry. Let it dry completely before putting the bedding back.

Seasonal rentals

With frequent changes of guests, a mattress wears and soils faster. A visual check after each departure and a planned deep clean help keep a property in top condition.
