A sofa is one of the most used pieces of furniture at home. Dust, crumbs and everyday contact slowly build up in the fabric. The good news: small regular habits limit this build-up and space out deep cleans.
1. Read the care label
Before using any product, look for the label under a cushion. The usual codes are W (water-based cleaning), S (solvent only), WS (either) and X (vacuum only, no liquid). Using a product not meant for the fabric can leave marks or dull the colour.
2. Vacuum regularly
- Use an upholstery nozzle, including in the folds and under the cushions.
- Once a week is enough in most homes; more often with pets.
- Choose gentle suction so you do not pull on the fibres.
3. Rotate the cushions
Turn and swap seat and back cushions to spread wear and contact areas. Plump them up to restore volume.
4. Protect it from direct sun
Prolonged sunlight can fade some fabrics. If your sofa sits near a large window, a light curtain or moving it a few dozen centimetres can make a difference.
5. Act fast, without rubbing
As soon as a liquid is spilled, blot with a clean, dry cloth. Rubbing pushes the stain deeper into the fibres. For trickier cases, see our article on stains.
