Caring for a wool or berber rug

Vacuuming, rotating, stains: how to protect fibres and colours.

A wool or berber-style rug brings warmth and character to a room, but its thick fibres hold on to dust. A few precautions help keep it looking good for longer.

Vacuum in the right direction

  • Vacuum regularly, following the direction of the fibres.
  • For long-pile or fringed rugs, prefer gentle suction without a rotating brush, which could snag or pull the fibres.
  • Do not vacuum the fringes: brush them gently by hand.

Rotate the rug

Turn the rug from time to time to spread wear and light exposure, especially near a window.

Act fast on stains

Blot, do not rub, and avoid soaking: a rug that stays damp for too long can keep odours. Dark or bright colours may bleed, so always test on a discreet area.

Dry completely

After any cleaning, let it dry flat, in an airy place, away from direct sun. Do not put the rug back until it is dry through, including the underside.

When to use professional cleaning

A heavily used, very old, delicate or brightly coloured rug deserves an assessment before treatment. Send us a photo with its material and size: we will tell you what is possible.
